1. How to obtain Registration on the Income Tax Website
Before you starting registration on income tax portal, you should keep following details ready:
- Valid PAN
- Valid Mobile Number
- Valid Current Address
- Valid Email Address, preferably your own

Step 1: First you should visit income tax portal
Step 2: You will find ‘Register Yourself’ on the right-hand side. Click on the same.
Step 3: Then you should be required to select the type of user whether you are an Individual, HUF or any other types of taxpayer.
Step 4: Next, enter your personal details like PAN, name, and date of birth. The PAN will then become the user ID for the income tax department website. Remember your name should be exactly the same as provided while applying for your PAN card.

2. How to Login on Income Tax portal
Step 1: Visit the income tax portal incometax.gov.in
Step 2: Here, you will see a box on the top-right side that has a ‘Login’ button for registered users.
Step 3: Click on the ‘Login’ button. Then you have been redirected to the Login page.
Step 4: In this you have to enter your income tax login username and continue to proceed further. Please note that for income tax login, the user ID is your PAN card number.
Step 5: Confirm your secure access message and enter your correct password.
Step 6: Next, click on skip and it will take you to the dashboard page.
3. How to file income tax return on income tax portal
Important Note: To avoid loss of data/rework due session timeout, Click on ‘Save Draft’ button periodically to save the entered ITR details as a draft. The saved draft will be available for 30 days from the date of saving or till the date of filing the return or till there is no change in the XML schema of the notified ITR (Whichever is earlier).
Step 1: Go to the Income Tax e-Filing portal incometax.gov.in
Step 2: Login to e-Filing portal by entering user ID (PAN), Password, Captcha code and click ‘Login’.
Step 3: Click on the ‘e-File’ menu and click the ‘Income Tax Return’ link.

- Select ‘ITR Form Number’
- Select ‘Filing Type’ as ‘Original/Revised Return’

Step 7: Choose the appropriate Verification option in the ‘Taxes Paid and Verification’ tab.
Choose any one of the following option to verify the Income Tax Return:
- I would like to e-Verify
- I would like to e-Verify later within 120 days from the date of filing.
- I don’t want to e-Verify and would like to send signed ITR-V through normal or speed post to “Centralized Processing Center, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru – 560 500” within 120 days from date of filing.
Step 8: Click on ‘Preview and Submit’ button, Verify all the data entered in the ITR.

Step 10: On Choosing ‘I would like to e-Verify’ option, e-Verification can be done through any of the following methods by entering the EVC/OTP when asked for.
Step 11: The EVC/OTP should be entered within 60 seconds, else the Income Tax Return (ITR) will be auto-submitted. The submitted ITR should be verified later by using ‘My Account > e-Verify Return’ option or by sending signed ITR-V to CPC.
